Battle for the Chateau 1815
A display game from ‘Sherwood Wargames’ group.
Most of us are familiar with the outcome of the Battle of Waterloo, when
The Duke of Wellingtons Allied army defeated the French army of Napoleon.
Less well known is the key role in the battle that the Chateau of Hougoumont
played, and this is the purpose of our game today.
The Chateau, which occupied the extreme British right flank at the battle,
was a substantial group of building in a walled enclosure. An orchard,
and the wood of Hougoumont, lies to the south of the Chateau.
Three nationalities of troops occupied the Chateau, orchard, and wood
at the opening of hostilities at 11.30am; British Guards, Dutch Nassauers
and Hanoverians.
The French launched a number of attacks during the day, aimed at weakening
the centre of the Allied line. Although they drew additional Allied forces
to the defence, they had to use much larger French forces to do it. In
effect the opposite of what Napoleon had intended.
The “high tide” of their attacks succeeded in taking the woods,
which were only recaptured at the end of the day, and a temporary incursion
at the North gate of the Chateau.

The ‘Sherwood Wargames’ group is a group of hobbyists based
in Mansfield . We appreciate the help that many people have given us in
putting on this game. We would like to thank Pete Morbey, of Elite Miniatures
who supplied the figures, and Carol and Dennis from Hovels, who supplied
advice, support & most of the buildings. www.eliteminiatures.co.uk
